This patient had a sclerotic lesion on the OPG (FIg. 1), but was otherwise asymptomatic. A dental CT was performed to evaluate the lesion. This was seen to be well-defined and below the level of the mandibular canal, without bone expansion or destruction.
This appearance is typical of a bone island and is not significant. Bone islands in the mandible however are known to be dynamic lesions and can mildly increase and then regress as well.
