This article by the SHAPE (Screening for Heart Attack Prevention and Education) Task Force has been pre-published as an online article the American Journal of Cardiology. The recommendations made are straight and categorical and using either coronary artery calcium scoring (CAC) or carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), they have shown how to stratify patients into lower , moderate, moderately high, high and very high risk. Also, the extent of treatment and LDL level reduction has been shown as well.
The basic recommendation is that unless a person has no risk factors whatsoever, every man between the ages of 45-75 and women between the ages of 55-75, should get one screening atherosclerosis profile done, every five years.
